James Gillis, Estate Planning Attorney in Arlington

James Gillis has focused on wills, trusts and estates full time since 2009, and his practice covers nothing else.

Our mission

At Gillis Law, we treat our clients like family (in the positive sense, of course…). We take the time to get to know you, help you identify your goals, and provide all the information you need to make an informed decision. We strive to deliver exceptional advice, service, and results for you and your family. We serve clients in Virginia and D.C., with a particular focus on Northern Virginia.

Our practice is focused on all things related to wills, trusts, and estates. Our practice includes comprehensive estate planning, including probate avoidance and tax planning, estate administration, trust administration, and related matters, such as deeds for real estate.

Comprehensive estate planning

Our comprehensive estate planning services cover all contingencies so you, your family, and your assets are covered in the event of incapacity or death. We create custom structures so your spouse, children, and other beneficiaries receive maximum benefit from the assets and property you choose to leave for them. Some clients need to create structures that match provisions in a marital agreement or need estate tax planning. Sometimes simplicity is the prime goal, and the plan is to distribute all assets to children and other beneficiaries right away, outright and free of trust. In other cases, the assets are held and gradually released to children, so they have an opportunity to learn and grow. Some clients like to create continuing trusts for their beneficiaries, so the assets are protected against claims of creditors and predators. If there is a child or beneficiary with a disability, we can create a special trust so the child receives supplemental distributions without jeopardizing his or her rights to means-tested government benefits. Whatever the situation, we work to make sure your needs and intentions are carried out.

We regularly advise Executors and Trustees as counsel. We also directly administer estates and trusts as fiduciary, which relieves the beneficiaries from having to do the work themselves.

James A. Gillis

Founder · Gillis Law

James A. Gillis founded the firm on July 2, 2022. Prior to founding the firm, James worked at two boutique firms that were likewise devoted to wills, trusts, and estates, then at an Am Law 200 firm in the trusts and estates department. He made partner but decided he wanted to create his own firm. He has been thinking about wills, trusts, and estates full time since 2009.

Before law school, James originated commercial real estate loans for apartment buildings, mobile home parks, office buildings, shopping centers, and mixed-use properties. When he saw the paperwork involved in the transactions, he knew he needed to go to law school. He is well suited to this practice area, which sits at the intersection of appropriate documentation, numbers, and personal relationships.

James lives in Arlington, Virginia, with his family, including a small dog with a big heart.

Many of James’s clients come through the professionals they already trust. With the client’s permission, he shares drafts and the follow-up checklist and agrees with you on who prepares which return. You stay in the loop, so account changes and filings match the plan. If you have a client who needs a will, a trust or help with an estate, James is glad to talk.
